In last week’s SERIOUS TRAINING 26 I explained the evolution of training devices used to measure intensity in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s from a personal perspective. There I explained how the devices we were faced with then ultimately changed how we looked at training—and continue to do so to this day.

In the following article I will take you into the late 20th Century and then on to the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. Finally, I will tell you my thoughts on where we are headed next when it comes to measuring intensity, and what this may mean for your training and performance.

Let’s start by looking back at the progression of the power meter as we moved on from the 1980s and how it affected training, eventually in several sports—and me.

The first prototype SRM power meter.
